This painting illustrates an old profession of traditional ear cleaner, which is now waning. Some trace the profession to the 18th century, when India was under Mogul rule. “Kaan-saaf-wallah”, as known popularly, were in demand under British rule. With the popularity of disposable cotton swabs, this profession has decreased slowly. The painting is made on paper and comes without frame.

The Art:

The Kalighat Painting was originated in West Bengal in 19th century around Kalibari temple in Kolkata. These paintings get patronage from people who have been inspired by modern thoughts and aesthetics. The art is not restricted to only religious themes. They often depict different interpretation to mythology and contemporary events in their own unique way. Kalighat paintings are produced with variety of water based, opaque colours on paper.
