Madhubani Painting - Khobar

This painting on hand-made paper depicts “Khobar”.This is drawn in the chambers of newly married couple. The central theme of Khobar is love and fertility. A typical Khobar design commences with the story of Sita’s marriage and includes a set of six circles encircling a seventh central circle. Behind the central circle, a thin straight line is drawn reaching from top to bottom of the painting. Symbols of fertility and prosperity like fish, parrot, elephant, turtle, sun, moon, bamboo tree, lotus, etc are more prominent. Heavily charged with Tantric symbolism in its basic design and composition, a khobar depicts a pictorial intercourse using the lingam (phallus) and yoni (vulva) symbols. The painting is made on hand-made paper and comes without the frame.

The Art:

Madhubani Art dates back to the epochal period of Ramayana. According to mythology, King Janak ordered his subjects to decorate the entire town during Sita’s swayamvar. Since women generally stayed indoor, they decorated the walls with beautiful paintings.

The Artist:

The painting has been made by local artist Dilip Jha from Bihar.
