This painting depicts Vat Savitri puja, a festival celebrated in Bihar where women pray for their husband’s long life. The ritual is observed by married women, where they worship “Vat” - the Banyan tree and Savitri as an incarnation of Goddess. As per custom, ladies pour holy Ganga water on the tree, and tie red threads around the tree while going around the tree for 108 times. Soaked pulses, rice, mango, jack fruit, lemon, banana and several other fruits are offered as Bhoga to the Vat Savitri. The painting is made on hand-made paper and comes without frame.

The Art:

Madhubani Art dates back to the epochal period of Ramayana. According to mythology, King Janak ordered his subjects to decorate the entire town during Sita’s swayamvar. Since women generally stayed indoor, they decorated the walls with beautiful paintings.

The painting has been made by local artist Dilip Jha from Bihar.
