A set of 4 hand-painted coasters depicting Elephant in Madhubani style. Elephants are a powerful symbol in the Maithil culture. In the state of Bihar in India, where the Maithil people live, women paint pictures of pregnant elephants for good luck and fertility in marriage.
Madhubani paintings are believed to be in existance since the time of Ramayana but it was recognised only recently in 1950s. Their art have basic motifs, each having a deep rooted significance in their customs and traditions.
These coasters have been beautifully hand-painted on handmade paper which has been hot pressed and made into coasters.
This is made by the local artist from Madhubani where the art has originated.
