In this painting, a Zamindar and his wife are depicted while travelling. It was a common practice in India for men to accompany their wives when they have to travel. Unlike other cultures where it was considered taboo to remain seated close to wife or show affection to her in public, Bengali culture proudly displayed it in their paintings. The Art:
The Kalighat Painting was originated in West Bengal in 19th century around Kalibari temple in Kolkata. These paintings get patronage from people who have been inspired by modern thoughts and aesthetics. The art is not restricted to only religious themes.
