The Art:
Pattachitra paintings can be traced back to the establishment of the shire of Lord Jagannath at Puri in Odisha. The legend goes that this all started with an annual temple ritual that required the deities to be displaced for cleansing. Pattachitras were used to temporarily fill in their place while the ceremony was performed. The basic tales drawn revolves around the life of Lord Jagannath.
